St John’s wort (hypericum perforatum) is a perennial herb with a yellow flower that has been used to treat nervous conditions since ancient Greek times.
Uses of St. John’s Worts
The herb contains many active substances, including hypericin and hyperforin, which are thought to affect mood.The plant has many chemical compounds, some of which are believed to help depression by preventing nerve cells in the brain from reabsorbing the chemical messenger serotonin, or by reducing levels of a protein involved in the body’s immune system functioning
St. John’s Wort is grown for use as an anti-inflammatory, astringent and antiseptic. In ancient times, it was used as a sedative and a treatment for malaria, as well as a balm for wounds, burns and insect bites. The compound hyperforin in the plant is believed to have excellent antibacterial properties
Research conducted on the herb have found it to be superior to placebo and equivalent to standard antidepressants for the treatment of mild to moderate depression
In general, St John’s wort has been recommended as a useful alternative to prescription antidepressant medication for the treatment of mild depression
Side Effects
The most common side-effects are dry mouth, dizziness, increased sensitivity to sunlight (photosensitivity), gastrointestinal symptoms and fatigue.
