What’s Special about your Furnished Home?

What’s Special about your Furnished Home?
May 3, 2022 Kevin

Of the 300+ furnished apartments on platforms such as Airbnb and Booking.com, what makes yours stand out? What changes can you make to your home to increase the number of guests and profits?

By furnished homes standards, as a host, you are expected to have basic amenities; furniture, a clean home and functional utilities. Once the basics are in place, more needs to be done to your home for guests to choose it over other homes providing similar basic amenities.

Hosts have used methods below to give their homes an edge;

  1. Use of unique furniture and interior accessories.

This makes your design stand out. One of the ways to implement this can be through use of locally made furniture and accessories made from natural materials. This carpets, rugs and lighting made from sisal and reed(mkeka). It also includes use of locally woven baskets for storage and for plants as well as use of furniture made locally and from local fabrics such as kitenge.

Bringing the outdoors in

A majority of hosts have homes in apartments, sometimes without balconies and in areas with minimal vegetation. Human beings are natural beings and function best in spaces with natural elements or those which mimic nature. We have done blogs on biophilic design which focus on the various ways you can bring the outdoors in, but here we will focus on the most common way to implement this, which is through use of plants.

We recommend use of plants in every room possible including your balcony, bedroom, living room and bathroom. This obviously while keeping in mind that less is more 🙂

Inclusion of extras in your home

Lastly, to give your home leverage over others, you may consider selling an experience which is beyond a place to sleep.

This may include providing books and magazines for the guest. It may also include providing board games and card games as well as other forms of entertainment apart from the TV or radio in the home. Further to this, you may offer a directory of places for eating, shopping and for entertainment in your locality.

A little extra hospitality goes a long way in ensuring repeat customers and drawing new ones. To do this, you may consider providing essentials for making basic beverages and meals such as sugar, teas and coffees, water and condiments.
