Our Top 5 Interior Design Trends of 2021
Just like every other year, a list of trends are created by professionals in the industry that form the basis of predictions for interior design in that year. Of the tens of trends this year, these are our favourites for 2021:
1. Textured Furniture & Surfaces
The visual and tactile(touch) texture of a surface creates varying emotions and reactions depending on whether the surface is smooth, soft, hard or rough. Look at the tiles below for example;

This year, the trend is surfaces whose texture can be seen and felt by touch . This trend is expected to be featured in various aspects of interior design , from furniture, as illustrated below, to decorative accessories, and surfaces e.g wallpaper and on glass partitions in the form of fluted glass panes

2. Japandi
The Second trend we absolutely love for 2021 is Japandi. Japandi comes from a blend of Japanese and Scandinavian interior design styles. According to Leni Calas “Japandi design is the combination of Scandinavian functionality and Japanese rustic minimalism to create a feeling of art, nature, and simplicity.”

Japandi features elements of natural materials, muted earth tone colors, clean lines, and minimal furnishings. The choice of furniture craftsmanship focuses on quality and handmade pieces over throwaway, mass factory-produced pieces.

One of the top reasons why Japandi falls in our top 5 trends of 2021 is that it emphasises on sustainability. Its use of natural materials and simple designs makes it a great green decor style. The world is increasingly preaching sustainability and green design and its no surprise that Japandi falls on the Trends list of 2021.
3. Green Walls

Thankfully, we are gradually coming out of restrictions on movement and assembly that resulted from the Covid-19 Pandemic. But while we were knee-deep in it, few families had an option of going outdoors for nature and greenery.
Biophilic design loosely defined, is bringing the outdoors indoors, bringing nature into your interior space. And this is where green walls come in. The colour is reflective of nature, and having it on your wall or other surfaces e.g kitchen cabinets or soft furnishings, brings to your space the tranquility that we ordinarily associate with nature and greenery.

4. Natural Materials
We doubt this trend will ever go out of style. It prominently featured in the Interior Design Trends of 2020 (https://dhot.co.ke/interior-design-trends-of-2020/), and here it is again. Just like Japandi, we believe the top reason is the sustainability of these natural materials.

Here the focus is on materials such as bamboo, linen, wool, sisal, rattan, mohair, sheepskin, jute etc

5. Earthy Paint Tones

Loosely defined, earth colours are those colours naturally found in nature. This may either be what we see on the ground like soil, sand, rocks or greenery such as grass, trees etc. Just as in the trend of green walls above, owing to their link with nature, these colours tend to be calming, warm and inviting, and that may be why they have been on trend each year.

Finally, we introduce to you the Dulux colour of the year, Brave Ground. https://www.dulux.co.uk/en/dulux-colour-year-2021

Brave Ground is a warm neutral colour. It’s a variation of brown, with grey in its undertones but also a hint of red. We will do a separate article on it in the coming weeks, for those who may be interested in changing up their space before the year ends 🙂
Until then, we appreciate you taking time to read this article. We would love to hear from you, only so do we get to know how we can improve, so please leave a comment.
Thank you and stay blessed.
