Pattern 2: Presence of Water

The presence of water improves the experience of a space through the hearing, seeing or touching of water.

Benefits in Design

Research has shown that the presence of water has benefits in stress reduction, improvement in cognitive performance and positive impact on emotions and mood.

The presence of water;

  1. Reduces stress

2. Increases Feelings of Tranquility

3. Lowers Heart Rate and Blood Pressure

4. Improves Concentration and Memory Restoration

5. Enhances Perception and Psychological Responsiveness.

How then is the presence of water manifested naturally?

Rivers

Streams

Oceans

These can be simulated in your design through, e.g;

  1. Aquariums

2. Fountains

3. Imagery of Water

4. Water Walls

5. Ponds

How Can you Best Achieve the Benefits of this Pattern?

  • Prioritise water features that can be experiences through multiple senses
  • Prioritise naturally fluctuating water movement over predictable movement or stagnant water
  • Consider proximity to the water body

End!

There you go. We hope this pattern was informative and that you are able to implement it in your design consideration.

We would love to hear your thoughts on the pattern, so do drop us a comment 🙂
