We are almost done with the year, but it’s not too late to get on with the trends of 2020.
Below is the list of our favourites this year.
Organic Shapes

You have probably heard of the famous quote by William Kent (https://www.greatbritishgardens.co.uk/garden-designers/34-william-kent-1685-1748.html) that ‘nature abhors a straight line’.Think of it, from the shapes of leaves, structure of animals, shape of mountains, path of rivers, heck even life itself. Nothing in nature is straight. This is the inspiration behind this years trend of curves.
It is being used everywhere, from your kitchen island, your sanitary ware to furniture and accessories. It is a beautiful trend that takes away from the monotony of structure common place in conventional interior design.
Velvet & Cordruoy

The last time i saw corduroy so much in trend was in the early 90’s and it is interesting to see it back. In Kenya it has typically been associated with the old and banal, so it is interesting to see it back and being used in our everyday pieces. There is nothing that hasn’t been said about velvet. It is a timeless piece that we doubt will ever go out of style. This year we focus on the two materials on everything, from your seats, cushions, lamp shades bed coverings, blankets etc
Matte Finishes

I love the elegance of a matte finish. Timeless and effortless. Of late i especially love it on dinnerware and I have seen a lot of it in dinnerware shops in Nairobi. Matte flooring, paint finishes, accessories all scream effortless style! Too much of it can be a dump, so maybe you could try it in doses in your space and see how much it evolves it 🙂
Geometric Patterns

For someone who doesn’t do much of parallel lines, i tend to use geometric shapes in design quite a lot. So it is interesting to see that the annual trend setters see it my way. Plain walls can get exhausting to look at, but imagine if you could paint different areas of the same wall in different colours and gel them together effortlessly using geometric lines. Understandably, we are not all brave when it comes to trying new styles, and that is why small spaces like your home office or visitors cloak room could be places to experiment with this trend on your tiles or walls.
Terrazzo

This trend will definitely not be everyone’s cup of tea, least of all, mine. I however can take it in drip doses. On an entire wall or floor it can be an eyesore, but when well balanced with other finishes, it can be quite eye-catching. Where to use it? Everywhere. From your lamp bases, your flooring, kitchen surfaces, soft furnishings etc.
Vertical Gardens

For those not new to Dhot Interiors, you would understand our obsession with anything biophilia. Naturally, vertical gardens are my favourite trend of 2020. Bringing nature into interior space has scientifically been proven to be therapeutic, a distresser and to improve learning and thinking. We have dedicated 14 series of biophilic design in our blog, so check that out too. Where can we use these gardens? I would say anywhere where you need to relax, to learn or to think. So in your workspace, in schools, on your balcony, on your house’s external walls etc.
Marble

What is there to add about this finish? I love its versatility. From use on walls, to tiling, art work, furniture, the possibilities are endless. We have seen a lot of this trend this year, just like in previous years. It is a finish that is unlikely to go out of style owing to its class, and again, versatility.
Eco-Chic/Organic/Sustainable Materials
Human beings are natural beings. It is therefore not a surprise to see us adopting this trend of organic materials in the manufacture of everyday home decor pieces. This too is an element of biophilia just like green spaces, bringing the natural, indoors. Some of the materials that are increasingly being used are sisal, jute, plywood etc.

And to make what, you may ask?

Everything from your mirror, chairs, baskets, floor rugs, vases, wall decor etc
Colour of the year: Classic Blue

Who comes up with the colour of the year, you may ask.Well, Pantone does. https://www.pantone.com/color-intelligence/color-of-the-year/color-of-the-year-2020. Through a trend forecasting research, it looks for recurring patterns or colours in global culture. From this research, it sets the colour of the year that is then used in various industries from fashion , interior design, manufacturing etc. From your accent wall, your seat covers, soft furnishings, flooring, this colour can be used everywhere. Blue can be quite loud for an entire space. But small doses on your couch, curtains, accent wall, kitchenware will be brave and not totally out there:)
